Course Overview
These courses are offered either as a UCS College Group certificated course at the fee advertised or as an SEG Level 2 certificated course for an additional fee.
Whether a trainee or a young person interested in learning how to weld and acquiring new skills, are self-employed or an adult wanting to change career, or just looking to improve existing welding skills, then this is the right course.
There are two levels of training to suit specific needs, each covering a range of different welding processes and techniques. This course can provide learners with an industry recognised qualification (if this option is taken) and the acquisition of skills and knowledge in modern welding processes and techniques.
One welding process from a choice of MIG, TIG or manual metal arc welding. At Level 2 candidates will learn down hand welding. There is a theory element to each of the processes. Learners will also learn about the health and safety associated with welding.
Learners will be expected to wear the following mandatory PPE/RPE in our workshops when carrying out welding activities:

Head mounted welding screens

Air fed welding screens (Loaned and available on a first come first served basis)

Proban overalls

A P3 Respiratory protection which protects against welding fumes.
PPE/RPE which is brought in by learners for use in our workshops will be checked to ensure it is suitable for welding related activities.
Assessment Methods
Learners can choose whether or not they wish to work towards achieving the ABC Awards in Welding and Fabrication or to just acquire the welding and fabrication skills without taking the qualification. To achieve the ABC qualification learners will be primarily assessed in the form of practical tests. Each process is assessed via two weld tests along with an accompanying basic theory test.
Progression Options
Those achieving at Level 2 can progress onto Level 3 the following year or into employment as a welder. Learners may also choose to do another process at the same level.
Entry Requirements
At Level 2 there are no entry requirements, just an interest in learning a new skill and a commitment to attend evening classes.

All students have the opportunity to meet with a Careers Advisor for 1:1 career support.
The Student Experience Team can mentor and signpost students who are struggling with a range of issues that are negatively impacting their day-to-day life. The Student Experience Team works closely with the Safeguarding & Lifestyle Teams to promote proactive wellbeing enrichment sessions. The team can refer on to counselling when appropriate.

All of our students will have a personal tutor to support them with their academic progress and personal development. The tutorial programme consists of 1:1 support, group tutorials and guest speakers, plus targeted online resources which complement the UCS College Group Advantage scheme.
