Jason Gunningham
Principal, Bridgwater College

Jason is the Principal of Bridgwater College, leading the College with dedication, vision, and has over 30 years of experience in Further Education—all of which have been spent within the College where his educational journey first began as a student!

This unique lifelong connection to Bridgwater College has shaped Jason’s deep understanding of its community, values, and potential.

Throughout his career, Jason has successfully managed all curriculum areas across the UCS College Group, driving innovation, quality, and excellence in teaching and learning. Jason’s leadership extends beyond the College, serving as the new Chair of Governors for Bridgwater College Academy, Chair of the Association of Colleges Sport Regional Curriculum Network, and as an active member of the Association of Colleges Sport National Curriculum Advisory Board. These roles reflect his commitment to shaping education on both a local, regional and national scale.

Passionate about raising aspirations and creating opportunities for all, Jason believes in the power of education to transform lives. Their leadership philosophy centres on inclusivity, ambition, and collaboration—ensuring that every learner has access to the support, guidance, and inspirational teaching needed to achieve their goals.

Under Jason’s leadership, Bridgwater College continues to thrive as a place where staff and students are encouraged to reach their full potential, equipped with the skills, confidence, and opportunities to succeed in an ever-changing world.

Vinnie Maisey
Assistant Principal for Engineering and Automotive

Vinnie is the Assistant Principal for Engineering and Automotive at Bridgwater College. With many years of experience, he is committed to developing skills and fostering strong, long-term partnerships with industry.

With a background in vehicle operations and management, Vinnie has a clear understanding of industry requirements and works closely with employers to develop tailored programmes that meet local and regional skills needs while preparing students for both the current and future job market.

Vinnie is also passionate about supporting mental health and well-being and is committed to creating a positive, supportive environment for both students and staff.

Karen Stephens
Assistant Principal for Professional and Service Industries

Karen is the Assistant Principal for Professional & Service Industries, bringing a wealth of experience in the sector since 2008. Karen’s journey in the College began as an Associate Lecturer, progressively advancing through ranks as a Lecturer, Course Leader, Section Leader, and Head of Department, before assuming the role of Assistant Principal.

With a solid background in industry, Karen is committed to developing programmes that align with current market trends and student needs. In recent years, she has successfully built and strengthened relationships with key stakeholders, particularly with Somerset Foundation Trust, to enhance placement facilitation for T Levels in Health.

This focus on partnership with employers fosters the development of tailored programmes that prepare students effectively for the job market.

Dedicated to nurturing a supportive educational environment, Karen believes in the importance of student wellbeing and strives to create an inclusive atmosphere where both students and staff can thrive.

Liz Nuttall
Assistant Principal for A Levels & Creative Arts

Liz is the Assistant Principal for A Levels and Creative Arts at Bridgwater College. Liz has a Law degree and over 15 years’ teaching experience. Passionate about Teaching, Learning and Assessment (TLA), she has held roles including Advanced Skills Teacher and Teaching and Learning Manager. She is a BTEC and A Level examiner and a published author of A Level Law study guides and revision activities. Liz also delivers CPD for new Law teachers and, in her current role, champions high-quality TLA across the curriculum.

Jane Irons
Assistant Principal for Student Experience and Safeguarding

Jane is a qualified teacher and experienced inclusion practitioner who started her career at Bridgwater & Taunton College in March 2000. Initially teaching Maths, English, and employability programs, she transitioned into Foundation Studies, supporting learners with diverse needs.

With 26 years in Further Education, Jane is dedicated to achieving positive outcomes for all learners through ambitious curriculums that foster high aspirations. She has extensive experience in assessing and verifying Functional Skills and is a qualified NPTC Assessor and Level 3 Literacy Specialist.

As Assistant Principal, Jane collaborates with the leadership team to enhance the student experience, uphold safeguarding standards, and develop responsive curricula that provide clear progression routes. She is passionate about supporting students’ personal development and well-being, championing initiatives that promote independence, confidence, and character.

Steve Caldwell
Assistant Principal for Construction and Group Apprenticeships

Steve is the Assistant Principal for Construction at Bridgwater College and also leads the UCS College Group apprenticeships. With extensive experience in the Further Education and skill sector, Steve is a qualified post 16 Teacher and brings considerable senior management expertise across larger General Further Education Colleges.

A passionate advocate for high standards and learner success, Steve fosters a strong team dynamic and takes pride in having contributed to three Ofsted inspections rated Outstanding.

Steve’s connection with Bridgwater College began in 1984 as a construction apprentice laying the foundation for his future career. Before moving into Education, he successfully ran his own building company specialising in bespoke properties and home renovations across the Southwest. He also has international experience where he spent six months in Melbourne, Australia where he trained and assessed young bricklayers at a Construction trade School. 

Beyond his college role, Steve is deeply involved in the Further Education community. He is an Ofsted Inspector and has held influential positions such as the Regional Secretary for the Guild of Bricklayer’s, the Southwest chair of the British Association of Construction Heads (BOCH) and as the AOC Southwest world skills champion. Steve is committed to creating opportunities for local people to thrive helping them to realise their potential and succeed in their chosen career.
