Course Overview

The course covers the following:

  • Supporting the class teacher to enhance learners’ progress and development either in groups or individually
  • Understanding positive learning behaviours to support learner progress
  • How to apply a range of strategies to support learners of different abilities under the professional direction and supervision of a qualified teacher
  • Supporting learners with special educational needs and disabilities and learners with social, emotional, and mental health vulnerabilities.

The College has excellent relationships with schools in the area and provide a supportive learning environment. The teaching staff and assessors have recent, relevant workplace experience and enjoy the opportunity to nurture new practitioners.

You must attend online sessions one moring per week, and are expected to complete written assignment work in self-study time at home. In addition, you must attend College one morning each half-term.

Assessment Methods

Teaching is through a combination of online lessons and on campus workshops at Taunton College.

You will build a portfolio to use in a professional discussion as part of your End Point Assessment, which will include coursework and practical assessments in your workplace. Your End Point Assessment (EPA) will have two components:

  • Professional discussion
  • Observation with questions.

You may be required to sit exams for Functional Skills in English and Maths if you do not already have these.

Progression Options

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, you could find permanent employment in primary, secondary, special schools, alternative provision, and further education institutions such as sixth forms and colleges.

Entry Requirements

You will need at least a Level 2 qualification in English and maths.
