Course Overview

A Level Spanish offers a dynamic and enriching opportunity to build on your GCSE knowledge and develop advanced language skills. This course is designed to deepen your understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures through a wide range of social, political, historical, and artistic themes.

You will enhance your fluency and confidence in spoken Spanish while engaging with authentic materials and contemporary topics relevant to the Spanish-speaking world.

In Year 1, you will study a Spanish-language film, exploring its themes, characters, and cultural context. In Year 2, you will read and analyse a literary text and undertake an independent research project on a topic of your choice, which you will present in your speaking exam.

Topics may include:

  • Family structures, marriage, and social change
  • Youth culture and identity in Spanish-speaking societies
  • Education, travel, and employment opportunities
  • Regional traditions and heritage in Spain
  • Media, music, art, and cinema
  • Social issues: diversity, discrimination, and inclusion
  • Spanish history: the Civil War, Franco’s regime, and post-war Spain.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is based on the four key language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. You will complete regular internal assessments throughout the course. Final assessment includes:

  • Two written examination papers
  • One speaking examination, including your independent research project.
