Course Overview

Please note: you will make your selection of three A Levels once you have progressed into the application process.

During your time, you will study a wide of range of topics, looking at theories and explanations for social behaviour and the methods used in social research. Lessons involve discussion, analysis and debate, all of which offer you a real opportunity to get to grips with the material, as well as the chance to prepare yourself for the demands of the exam.

A Level Sociology gives you a strong foundation for further study at degree level. It will provide the learner with knowledge that can be applied to all aspects of society as it encourages the use of a variety of academic skills, especially thinking critically about the world. Topics include the causes of crime, educational inequalities, and the role of religion in contemporary society.

As well as a varied classroom experience, this subject gives you the opportunity to explore sociological issues by participating in several trips, including the Shepton Mallet prison, and the Royal Courts of Justice.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through written examinations with regular internal assessment taking place as the course unfolds. Your final A Level exam will be made up of three 2 hour exam papers covering the entire programme at the end of year two.

Studying Sociology at A level opens up a range of progression options. Students can pursue higher education in subjects like sociology, criminology, social policy or anthropology. It also provides a strong foundation for careers in social work, education, law, journalism, and public services. You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 4 range including English.
