Course Overview

Please note: you will make your selection of three A Levels once you have progressed into the application process.

The study of Politics will help you to understand the major domestic and global issues that affect your day-to-day life, as well as the roles of individuals and organisations in shaping political decision-making.

We will examine the political systems in both the UK and USA, as well as the key political thinkers that helped shape these political systems. We will also learn about the ways in which the public engage with politics and participate in political action.

In addition to your classroom studies, you will have the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament, gaining firsthand experience of UK politics and government.

In terms of voluntary experience, students have been involved with Bridgwater Town Council Youth Forum, helping shape the town’s policies for the benefit of young people.

Topics may include:

  • UK politics
  • Core political ideas, e.g. Socialism, Conservatism, and Liberalism
  • UK government
  • Non-core political issues, e.g. Anarchism
  • Government and politics of the USA.

Assessment Methods

You will be formally assessed through three written examinations at the end of your second year.

Progression Options

Studying Politics helps you develop your ability to analyse and evaluate complex information, shaping the way you think about the world. You will learn how to think critically, carefully considering arguments and counter-arguments to reach informed conclusions.

The knowledge and skills developed in studying Politics are transferrable to a wide range of undergraduate qualifications but are of particular benefit to those who intend to study Politics, International Relations, History, Law and any other of the humanities or social sciences.

Politics is also a complementary subject for those considering jobs in politics, business, the armed forces, or working abroad.

Five GCSEs in the 9 to 4 range including English.
