Course Overview

If you want a career in the performing arts industry, a qualification in Musical Theatre, Dance, or Acting is an excellent choice. This practice-based course offers three pathways – Musical Theatre, Dance, or Acting – all designed to equip you with the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence valued by employers in the creative industry.

Sessions take place at The McMillan Theatre, where students regularly participate in workshops and performances led by industry professionals. You will also have the opportunity to perform at the theatre, a professional venue where our successful productions have played to packed audiences of 300+ people each night.

All students study a broad range of modules, providing a strong foundation in the performing arts. You will be able to specialise in your chosen pathway based on your skills and career aspirations.

Throughout the course, work placements and work-readiness training ensure that you are prepared to continue your studies or enter the professional industry. Students will have the opportunity to attend live performances and take part in educational trips. Past trips have included visits to New York, London, and Disneyland Paris.

Somerstage Associates Programme

Students receive regular training from West End veterans through our exclusive Somerstage Associates Programme. As a Somerstage Associate, you’ll enjoy top-notch training, access to industry guest artists workshops, and top-tips for audition preparations. Our students learn to engage with agents, and gain the skills needed to thrive in the competitive world of Musical Theatre.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is coursework-based, with assignments in each module that may involve:

  • Rehearsing and performance projects
  • Creative projects in devising / choreography
  • Group work and working collaboratively with others
  • Skills, techniques, and industry training in various theatre styles
  • Self-tapes, showreels, and how to secure work
  • Audition practice, training, and guidance
  • Personal performance projects.

Upon successful completion, you will recieve an overall grade of Distinction*, Distinction, Merit, or Pass.

Progression Options

By the end of the course, you will be fully trained in musical theatre, dance, singing, and acting. Many of our graduates have progressed to top performing arts schools, including ArtsEd, Creative Academy, Addict Dance, Wilkes, Performers College, Guildford School of Acting, Urdang, Falmouth University, Chichester University, Bird College Conservatoire of Dance and Musical Theatre, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Royal College of Music, and the Institute of the Arts Barcelona.

Our alumni include students who have gone on to work as professional performers in the West End, touring companies, and entertainment holiday parks. We are fortunate to welcome back our alumni regularly to lead workshops and talks, sharing their experiences and providing valuable industry insights to our students.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 4 range, or a Level 2 Diploma at Merit grade. Dance, drama, music, or expressive arts subjects would be an advantage, as well as performance experience in or out of school.

Entry is subject to a successful interview and passing our entry audition event.
