Course Overview
Please note: you will make your selection of three A Levels once you have progressed into the application process.
Prospective students have a choice of pathways through which to explore the discipline of History.
Our Modern History route examines the issue of rights and freedoms in the modern world, with a focus upon 20th century American history, as well as India’s struggle for independence from British rule.
During the second year, you will study political agitation and parliamentary reform in Britain, as well as completing a coursework module. This will provide you with an opportunity to produce an independent research project investigating why historians disagree about an issue of your choosing.
In addition, students will have access to guest speakers, the opportunity to involve themselves in community projects, as well as to participate in residentials and trips.
This subject enables you to develop the skills of a working historian by understanding the historical concepts of change, continuity, causation, consequence, significance, and interpretation.
Topics may include:
- In search of the American Dream: The USA, 1917-96
- India: The road to independence, 1914-48
- Protest, agitation, and parliamentary reform in Britain, 1780-1928.
Assessment Methods
You will be assessed through three written examinations at the end of your second year.
You will also be required to submit a 4,000-word coursework essay.
Progression Options
A good grade in A Level history is highly valued by all universities. It is suitable for those intending to study a wide range of subjects at undergraduate level but may be of value to those intending to study History, Archaeology, Politics, Law, or English.

The Student Experience Team can mentor and signpost students who are struggling with a range of issues that are negatively impacting their day-to-day life. The Student Experience Team works closely with the Safeguarding & Lifestyle Teams to promote proactive wellbeing enrichment sessions. The team can refer on to counselling when appropriate.
