Course Overview

Please note: you will make your selection of three A Levels once you have progressed into the application process.

Prospective students have a choice of pathways through which to explore the discipline of History.

Our Early Modern History route examines revolutions in early modern and modern Europe, with a focus upon the English Civil Wars and the French Revolution.

During the second year, you will study political agitation and parliamentary reform in Britain, as well as completing a coursework module. This will provide you with an opportunity to produce an independent research project investigating why historians disagree about an issue of your choosing.

In addition, students will have access to guest speakers, the opportunity to involve themselves in community projects, as well as to participate in residentials and trips. This subject enables you to develop the skills of a working historian by understanding the historical concepts of change, continuity, causation, consequence, significance, and interpretation.

Topics may include:

  • Britain: conflict, revolution, and settlement, 1625-1701
  • France in revolution, 1774-99
  • Protest, agitation, and parliamentry reform in Britain, c1780-1928.

You will be assessed through three written examinations at the end of your second year.
