A Level English Language is a fascinating subject which will develop your knowledge of how we use language far beyond what you learnt at GCSE. It is ideal for anyone preparing for a future career in journalism, media, publishing, marketing, and all fields in which written and spoken methods of communication are important.

You will study a range of linguistic concepts and apply them to both spoken and written texts, explore how and why the English language has changed over the past four hundred years, and learn about how we develop our language skills from birth and throughout childhood. You will also have the opportunity to craft your own writing for a variety of purposes and audiences and to conduct your own independent language investigation for coursework.

Topics may include:

  • Linguistics
  • Language change
  • Language in the media
  • Theories related to gender, power, and technology
  • Spoken, written, and multimodal forms of communication
  • Child language acquistion.
