Course Overview
The Level 2 Engineering and Manufacturing Foundation Apprenticeship is designed to provide learners with a broad introduction to engineering and manufacturing principles, preparing them for progression into higher-level apprenticeships or employment within the sector. The programme develops essential technical knowledge, practical skills and workplace behaviours required in modern engineering and manufacturing environments.
Learners gain an understanding of key engineering concepts and learners are enabled to apply their knowledge to workplace challenges and develop problem-solving skills throughout. The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with employers to reflect current industry practices and local labour market needs. Learners benefit from workplace exposure and the development of transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, digital competence and professionalism.
Topics may include:
- Health and safety
- Engineering processes
- Tools and equipment
- Manufacturing techniques
- Continuous improvement.
Assessment Methods
Assessment is through an End Point Assessment (EPA) which includes two key components:
- Knowledge Test: Assesses understanding of engineering and manufacturing principles, health and safety, and sustainability practices.
- Practical Assessment: Demonstrates competence through observed tasks, project work, or a portfolio of evidence.
Progression Options
You could progress onto a Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship, such as Engineering Technician, Machining Technician, Engineering Maintenance Technician (EMT) or Food and Drink Maintenance Engineer.
Alternatively, you could enter directly into employment within engineering and manufacturing industries in trainee or junior operator roles, allowing you to continue developing your skills in the workplace.

All students have the opportunity to meet with a Careers Advisor for 1:1 career support.
The Student Experience Team can mentor and signpost students who are struggling with a range of issues that are negatively impacting their day-to-day life. The Student Experience Team works closely with the Safeguarding & Lifestyle Teams to promote proactive wellbeing enrichment sessions. The team can refer on to counselling when appropriate.

All of our students will have a personal tutor to support them with their academic progress and personal development. The tutorial programme consists of 1:1 support, group tutorials and guest speakers, plus targeted online resources which complement the UCS College Group Advantage scheme.
