Course Overview

The ECITB Scholarship Programme is a one year course that will support learners to pursue a full time off the job programme in Pipefitting. During their studies learners will acquire Nationally recognised engineering qualifications as well receiving other skills training relevant to their chosen discipline. The scheme offers employers an excellent opportunity to recruit a young person who has had the requisite training to be either fast-tracked into an apprenticeship or be recruited as a direct site hire. To support the learners on this full-time programme the ECITB will pay an allowance of up to £60/week during term time based on attendance. The ECITB Scholarship is an ideal pre-apprenticeship programme for anyone looking to start a career as an Engineering Construction Pipefitter or Welder. The Pipefitter or Welder is a vital Engineering Construction role, working within strictly defined processes and procedures to exacting standards. This often involves working on major infrastructure projects for example power stations and oil and gas facilities both in the UK and overseas Engineering Construction Industry.

The ECITB scholarship is made up of the following elements:

  • ECITB Level 2 Diploma in Supporting the Installation of Engineering
  • Construction Plant and Systems – Pipefitting
  • ECITB NOVA passport
  • ECITB HSO Bronze – site readiness training including CCNSG
  • Work Experience
  • Employer Visits

As an ECITB Scholar you will receive a learner allowance of £60 per week, based on attendance (excludes holidays)

Scholars will begin with core safety training and understanding documentation before moving into marking out and shaping pipework components. They develop skills in assembling pipe systems, supporting installation and dismantling activities, and assisting with welding operations. The course finishes with a review of overall competence through practical assessments and discussion.

Learners will be expected to wear the following mandatory PPE/RPE in the Bridgwater College workshops when carrying out welding activities:

  • Welding gloves
  • Leather apron – Leather Sleeves
  • Head mounted Air Fed welding screens (Loaned)
  • Safety glasses
  • Ear plugs
  • Safety boots (supplied by ECITB)
  • Flame Retardant overalls (supplied by ECITB)

PPE/RPE which is brought in by learners for use in our workshops will be checked to ensure it is suitable for welding related activities.

Assessment Methods

Learners are assessed through a combination of practical and knowledge-based activities to ensure they can work safely and effectively in welding environments. Assessments include:

  • Knowledge Tests Online ECITB set tests assess understanding of safety, documentation, tools, drawings and pipefitting procedures
  • Practical Skills Assessments Learners are observed completing tasks such as marking out, shaping components, assembling pipework, preparing and reinstating work areas, and supporting installation or dismantling activities
  • Behaviour Assessment Safety awareness, communication, quality focus and professional conduct are assessed during practical tasks and via portfolio evidence
  • Holistic Technical Discussion A final structured discussion reviews overall knowledge, skills and behaviours across all pipefitting units to confirm competence
  • Welding Performance Requirements Learners must complete at least two different welds, using different processes or joint types, meeting industry standards such as BS EN 4872.

Progression Options

Learners who complete the Pipefitting pathway can progress into a range of roles within engineering construction. This qualification supports entry into supervised site based pipefitting work and provides a strong foundation for further skills development. Progression routes include moving on to Level 3 qualifications or apprenticeships in pipefitting or related engineering disciplines, leading to more advanced responsibilities. With further training and experience, learners may progress toward skilled pipefitter roles, welding related duties, or eventually supervisory and engineering support positions within the wider engineering construction industry.

Entry Requirements

L2 Maths and English (such as GCSE at grade 4 or above or an equivalent qualification) There will be an interview and selection process supported by employers.

Application and Selection We’d love to hear from you! If you’re interested in joining the course, simply apply through the college website. Once we receive your application, we’ll arrange an initial interview with one of our assessors to chat about your goals and answer any questions you may have.
