Course Overview

The ECITB Scholarship Programme is a one year course that will support learners to pursue a full time off the job programme in welding. During their studies learners will acquire Nationally recognised engineering qualifications as well receiving other skills training relevant to their chosen discipline. The scheme offers employers an excellent opportunity to recruit a young person who has had the requisite training to be either fast-tracked into an apprenticeship or be recruited as a direct site hire. To support the learners on this full-time programme the ECITB will pay an allowance of up to £60/week during term time based on attendance.

The ECITB scholarship is made up of the following elements:

  • ECITB Level 2 Diploma Introduction to Welding
  • ECITB NOVA passport
  • ECITB HSO Bronze – site readiness training including CCNSG
  • Work Experience
  • Employer Visits

As an ECITB Scholar you will receive a learner allowance of £60 per week, based on attendance (term time only excludes holidays)

Scholars will focus on developing TIG (Tungsten inert gas) and MAG (Manual Active Gas) welding skills.

They will start off with running beads on plate in the down hand position. From here their skill set will be stretched and challenged by producing beads on plate in various welding positions.

Once competency has been achieved running beads, scholars will progress onto fillet joints. The joint positions covered will include PA Flat Position, PB Horizonal Vertical. This will give a brilliant opportunity to develop high level skills needed to weld in challenging positions.

Scholars will work towards and attain a BS EN 4872 code using the MAG and TIG processes in positions PA and PB.

Scholars will be expected to wear the following mandatory PPE/RPE in the Bridgwater College workshops when carrying out welding activities:

  • Welding gloves
  • Leather apron – Leather Sleeves
  • Head mounted Air Fed welding screens (Loaned)
  • Safety glasses
  • Ear plugs
  • Safety boots (supplied by ECITB)
  • Flame Retardant overalls (supplied by ECITB)

PPE/RPE which is brought in by learners for use in our workshops will be checked to ensure it is suitable for welding related activities.

Assessment Methods

Learners are assessed through a combination of practical and knowledge-based activities to ensure they can work safely and effectively in welding environments. Assessments include:

  • Knowledge Tests Each unit includes a written knowledge test to check understanding of safety, documentation, welding techniques and preparation requirements.
  • Practical Skills Assessments Learners are observed carrying out tasks either in the workshop or a simulated environment. This includes preparing work areas, selecting materials, setting up equipment, performing welding activities and reinstating the work area afterwards.
  • Behaviour Assessment Professional behaviours—such as working safely, communicating well and following procedures—are assessed during practical tasks and through supporting evidence
  • Holistic Technical Discussion Learners take part in a structured discussion that reviews their knowledge and skills across the whole qualification
  • Welding Performance Requirements Learners must complete at least two different welds, using different processes or joint types, meeting industry standards such as BS EN 4872.

Progression Options

Learners who complete the ECITB Scholarship into Welding can progress into a range of engineering construction pathways. This includes moving on to higher-level welding qualifications such as the ECITB Level 3 Diploma in Pipe Welding or the ECITB Level 3 Diploma in Plate Welding. Learners may also progress into apprenticeships in engineering construction and related disciplines, or into supervised entry level employment within welding and fabrication environments, using this qualification as a foundation for further skills development.

Entry Requirements

L2 Maths and English (such as GCSE at grade 4 or above or an equivalent qualification) There will be an interview and selection process supported by employers.

Application and Selection We’d love to hear from you! If you’re interested in joining the course, simply apply through the college website. Once we receive your application, we’ll arrange an initial interview with one of our assessors to chat about your goals and answer any questions you may have. After this, you may be invited to a fun and supportive selection day at the college, where you can get a feel for the environment and show us your enthusiasm. We’re excited to help you take the next step on your journey!
