Course Overview

This exciting T Level is designed for students aged 16–19 who are keen to pursue a career in the digital sector. The T Level in Digital Support and Security equips you with the essential knowledge and skills to progress into highly skilled employment, apprenticeships, or further study at university. The qualification is designed to train the next generation of IT support, network infrastructure and cybersecurity engineers.

Digital support and security is one of the key target areas for growth in the IT sector. Increased reliance on IT systems in the business environment creates higher demands for IT engineers who understand how to deploy and support these critical systems.

During the course you will study a range of skills and knowledge required to build hardware and networking systems that not only function but allow individuals and businesses to develop and thrive in an increasingly digital environment. You will learn how systems are used for a wide variety of applications to ensure that you can better support those using IT to do their jobs more efficiently and safely. All candidates will have the chance to work towards industry standard qualifications from Cisco.

Throughout the course, you will develop your understanding of core digital concepts, including problem solving, data, legislation, digital environments, business context, emerging issues, and cyber security. By the end of the programme, you will be able to demonstrate threshold competence—meaning you are fully prepared to continue developing your expertise in the workplace or in higher education.

Topics may include:

  • Problem solving
  • Digital support
  • Data analysis
  • Legislation
  • Business context
  • Emerging issues
  • Digital environments
  • Cybersecurity
  • Digital infrastructure
  • Project planning.

An industry placement is a core, compulsory, component of the T Level and it represents 20% of the overall programme. Achievement of the industry placement and working with an appropriate employer is essential for achievement and awarding of the final qualification.

During the industry placement, you need to complete a minimum of 315 hours across the two years, which will fit around your in-class studies. Completion of the industry placement is subject to a successful review with the employer against agreed targets.

Assessment Methods

In both years of the course, you will be assessed through written theory exams and externally examined practical projects.

Internal assessments include group work, case studies and presentations.

Progression Options

This qualification aligns with a range of progression routes, including advanced apprenticeships, higher and degree apprenticeships, university/higher education and employment within the digital sector.

T Levels provide you with UCAS points that count towards degree-level entry requirements if you would like to progress to university, whether our own University Centre Somerset or a university of your choice.

Entry Requirements

You will need a minimum of five GCSEs in the 9 to 4 range, including a minimum of grade 4 in both GCSE English and GCSE Maths. Or successful completion of the Computing & Digital – Level 2 Foundation Year. Entry is subject to a successful interview.

If you have not achieved the required grades to start a T Level, you could complete the tailored Computing & Digital – Level 2 (Foundation Year), which is designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to progress to the T Level in the following year.
