Course Overview

This course is perfect if you have basic skills in music performance or music technology and want to develop both your practical abilities and theoretical understanding further.

Designed for those with a passion for music and a strong desire to learn new skills, it provides a solid foundation for working in the music industry and developing your skills in performing in readiness for your career in the industry.

You will explore a wide range of music-related subjects through units that develop your performance skills and industry knowledge. You’ll learn how to sequence and produce beats, operate in a professional recording studio environment, compose and create your own music as well as develop your skills as a performer.

You will develop skills in industry standard music production software such as Logic Pro and Ableton to compose, create and deliver high quality mixes to an audience.

The course culminates in a public performance, giving you the opportunity to showcase the skills you’ve developed over the year. Work placements and employability training are integrated throughout the course, ensuring you are prepared for further study or entry into the workplace.?

  • Music production and sequencing
  • Music industry studies
  • Improving instrumental performance or DJ skills
  • Music event performance and rehearsal techniques
  • Studio recording techniques
  • Podcast production.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is coursework-based and consists of assignments that include practical work, group and individual projects, written tasks and research. You will be encouraged to critically evaluate your own work and that of others, setting personal targets to track your progress and development.

Progression Options

Upon successful completion with a Merit average, GCSE maths and English, and a successful interview, students can progress onto Level 3 courses such as Music Technology and Performance or the T Level in Media.

Alternatively, you may choose to pursue employment within the creative industries.

Entry Requirements

You need four GCSEs in the 9 to 2 range. Entry to this course is subject to a successful interview and you may be asked to perform using your instrument if you wish to pursue the performance pathway.

No prior experience is required for the DJ pathway, but it would be advantageous. Entry will also be subject to a willingness to progress your skills as a creative, as well as being dedicated to attaining a GCSE in English or maths, if not already obtained at school.
