Course Overview

Please note: you will make your selection of three A Levels once you have progressed into the application process.

A Level Chemistry (OCR Chemistry A) is an excellent subject to study as it provides a deep understanding of the principles that govern the natural world, from the behaviour of atoms and molecules to the complex reactions that sustain life. It fosters a sense of curiosity and innovation, encouraging students to explore and contribute to advancements in technology and scientific research.

The subject develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as students learn how to analyse data, conduct experiments, and draw evidence-based conclusions. These skills are invaluable in both academic and professional settings and are applicable in various fields like engineering, biotechnology and environmental science.

A Level Chemistry opens numerous career opportunities, as it is a prerequisite for many science-related degrees such as medicine, dentistry and pharmacy.

Topics may include:

  • Foundations in chemistry
  • The periodic table and energy
  • Core organic chemistry
  • Physical chemistry and the transition elements
  • Organic chemistry and analysis.

To comply with our safety policy, you are expected to buy a lab coat which can be purchased via the College online store. You will also need a calculator, and we suggest you buy an OCR-endorsed textbook.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through written examinations, with regular internal assessment taking place as the course unfolds. The written exams assess your knowledge of both theory and practical skills.

Your final A Level exam will be made up of three exam papers covering the entire programme at the end of year two.
