Course Overview
The Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) – Machining Pathway provides apprentices with the technical knowledge and underpinning theory required to work as a Machining Technician within advanced engineering and manufacturing environments.
This diploma covers Engineering health, safety and environmental practices, Conventional and CNC machining operations, Continuous improvement and business efficiency practices.
Topics may include:
- Health and safety in engineering
- Communication and teamwork
- Applied science for engineering
- Properties and applications of engineering materials
- Engineering drawing and CAD
- Engineering measurement and inspection
- Manufacturing planning and production methods.
Please note: there is a £1,500 one-off cost (pathway specific).
Assessment Methods
Assessment is through a mix of both written assignments and observations.
Learners will submit assessments through One File for review and feedback. At least one observation in practice will take place during the programme, to gather any workplace specific supporting evidence to showcase their application of knowledge.
Progression Options
You could progress to HNC/HND Engineering qualifications, Higher Apprenticeships, Degree Apprenticeships in Engineering or Manufacturing, or directly into employment at supervisory or specialist machining roles within industry.
Entry Requirements
You will need GCSEs in English and maths at a minimum grade 4, or alternatively English and maths functional skills at Level 2.

The Student Experience Team can mentor and signpost students who are struggling with a range of issues that are negatively impacting their day-to-day life. The Student Experience Team works closely with the Safeguarding & Lifestyle Teams to promote proactive wellbeing enrichment sessions. The team can refer on to counselling when appropriate.
