Course Overview

This course is ideal for those with a keen interest in becoming more self-sufficient in maintaining their own car and preparing it for a service or MOT in order to reduce bills or manage them better. Ideally learners will have undertaken the Car Maintenance Basic course or had a conversation with the tutor to establish suitable previous experience and safe working practices.

The course takes place in a purpose built workshop providing a realistic working environment with excellent up-to-date facilities. The course is flexible and the content adaptable to the needs of the group. Learners will be working on college cars for the whole course.

This intermediate car maintenance course provides more in-depth knowledge of vehicle maintenance.

  • H&S, tools and equipment
  • Removal of suspension components including coil springs and shock absorbers
  • Tracking / wheel alignment
  • Tyre changing and balancing
  • Timing belt changes on engine rigs
  • Various MOT repairs.

Assessment Methods

This course is a non-qualification course but you will be given clear instructions on how to tackle each practical activity and given feedback to help you learn and then master each technique. There are potential progression routes for further study within College.

Entry Requirements

Ideally you will have completed the Car Maintenance Basic course or have experience of maintaining your own vehicle and can demonstrate safe working practices within a workshop environment.

Sturdy (ideally steel toe cap) boots and overalls must be worn for all activity within the workshops. These need to be provided by each learner.
